Seed Program for Korean Studies

Objectives

• To Fund programs at universities outside Korea that lack educational infrastructure for Korean Studies

Focus of Funding

• Funding educational and academic institutions outside of Korea which are lacking in Korean Studies infrastructure.
• Creating an environment for the development and management of educational and talent fostering programs for Korean Studies
• Expanding funding for areas subject to Korean government policy such as the New Southern Policy and New Northern policy countries as well as overseas areas that have not yet received funding for Korean Studies.

Core University Program for Korean Studies

Objectives

• To select universities around the world with high capabilities in Korean Studies education and research, and foster them as regional hubs for Korean Studies through long-term funding.
• To enhance the national brand of Korea by fostering core universities for Korean Studies overseas.

Focus of Funding

• Support excellent Korean Studies education programs of overseas universities which can serve as core hubs of Korean Studies based on regional situations and characteristics.
• Strategically select and fund Korean Studies programs of universities in regions that are yet to receive adequate support.
• Increase the number of Korean Studies education and research hubs through further connecting the Seed Program for Korean Studies and the Core University Program.

Laboratory Program for Korean Studies

Objectives

• To produce world-class research outcomes related to Korean studies with strong international competitiveness, through supporting interdisciplinary collaborative research by both Korean and overseas scholars

Focus of Funding

• Promote overseas spreading of domestic researches as well as strengthen overseas Korean Studies, by supporting outstanding research teams both in Korea and abroad
• Expand the scope of Korean Studies by supporting researches in relevant fields
• Boost the influence of project outcomes and strengthen communication between domestic and overseas academia, through encouraging the participation of world-class scholars

Strategic Research Institute Program for Korean Studies

Objectives

• To Provide long-term support of overseas Korean Studies research institutes and centers that have a solid foundation in Korean Studies research
• To Establish hubs that could motivate and aid the growth of Korean Studies in neighboring regions, and expand the role of an academic institute to include contribution to public diplomacy

Focus of Funding

• Designating research centers with a strong foundation in Korean Studies, cultivated through the Laboratory or Core University Programs, as global Korean Studies hubs
• Prioritizing support for leading Korean Studies research centers so that they can collaborate with nearby Korean Studies institutions and further spread the Korean Studies research outcomes

Academic Translation of Korean Texts

Objectives

• To contribute to the international spread of Korean Studies by translating the Pre-modern Korean classics and Modern & Contemporary Korean texts that are academically valued into English

• Translating pre-modern Korean classics as well as modern & contemporary Korean texts of academic value and publishing the translated works at acclaimed overseas university presses or academic publishers

Supporting the Development of Koreanology Contents for Foreign users, high- quality Individual research (monograph), and compilation of Korean/English Dictionaries

Fostering a New Wave of K-Academics

Objectives

• Global citizens are now more than aware of Koreans’ recent accomplishments in the area of political advancements and economic developments. Korean popular culture has been generating tremendous buzz in every corner of the world. Now it is time to let people around the world know, that aside from all the modern successes the Koreans were able to achieve, Korea still has much to offer. For the past century, Korean scholars have been engaged in studies of its own history, literature, philosophy and art, which we would now have to try spreading around the world.
• Koreanology programs on the KSPS Global platform have been endeavoring to lay out the ground work for that very purpose. Infrastructure for Koreanology studies and education are being established everywhere as a result of such efforts. Now it is time to provide such systems with proper software, including academic contents that could be utilized in researches and education. The new program launched in 2021, Fostering a New Wave of K-Academics, funds domestic Korean research institutes to develop new Korean studies combining Korean expertise and foreign interests, and create online educational contents that could aid foreign Koreanology research and education in the years to come.

Objectives

• This program aims to create high-quality dictionaries that contain terms mainly used in Korean Studies for widening the knowledge on Korea and providing research infrastructure in Korean studies around the world

Focus of Funding

• This program focuses on compiling dictionaries that offer research resources to help study Korean Studies in Korea.
• This program focuses on creating encyclopedic resources of Korean Studies terminology that would promote Korean studies and education around the world.

Grand Series of Korean Studies

Objectives

• This program aims to deepen knowledge of Korea Studies and spread research results in Korean Studies through publication in Korean Academic Series

Focus of Funding

• 20th Century Korean Academic Series focuses on finding a new vision and path for Korean society through the book series that examines the history of Korea in the 20th century, ridden with challenges and calamities for the Korean people, namely the occupation by Japan, division of the peninsula, a civil war with an unprecedented scale, and the arrival of dictatorships.
• 21st Century Korean Culture Series focuses on looking back on the pre-modern and modern Korean cultural phenomenon and events, finding a solution for today’s problems and challenges around the world, and seeking new ways forward to the future.
• Korean Art Series focuses on shedding new light on “Korean Art” with new perspectives from existing studies and spread its achievement to the world by taking balanced views on the uniqueness and universality, the similarities and artistic differences from other countries, and the present and future of Korean Art.

Collection and Documentation of Manuscripts for Korean Studies

Objectives

• Systematically collect, process and analyze all kinds of materials for Korean studies (regardless of theme or area) located in both Korea and abroad, and reformat them into standardized academic contents suitable for Korean studies

• Promoting the creation of databases and support of their online service, in order to enhance usability of research outcomes supported by KSPS
• Comprehensive collection of materials that can be used for thematic, areal foundational studies
